Micromosaic

Fundamentals of Micromosaic

What is Micromosaic? What brought it about? How has it evolved? What are its traditions?

These were questions that I was dying to know! Plus things like: What is spun enamel? Stucco? The difference between smalti, tesserae, filati? How can I make them fast, traditional, or 100% my own?

This Beginning workshop includes:

  • Premade bezel (tons of choices). *Filati needed for your choice of design (100’s of colors and shapes).
  • Discussions on technique, traditions, stuccos, bezels, antique vs. modern, planning for larger pieces, etc.
  • Demos on pulling Filati.
  • Time to finish a small/medium piece.

Advanced Micromosaic

This class will build on all the information learned in the beginning class. You will be able to pull your own filati, mix your own stucco, and begin work on a much more detailed piece that could incorporate metal boundaries, jewels, and odd shapes. Pull enough filati for a few future pieces too.

Micromosaic Shop time

A day to work on your own projects and ideas.
A reasonable amount of glass is available for a small fee, but you can bring your own too.

Torches and kiln will be available to you.
This is only available to those who have taken Advanced Micromosaic from us or Lampworking from us.

Lampwork Glass

Lampwork Beads

Lampwork beads are one of the prettiest things in the glass world.
I’ve been in love with melting glass for over 25 years!
This class moves as fast as your skill permits.
No secrets! Just making beads.
We will be using 104 Effetre Murano glass.
You will get to keep all of the beads that you and I make in the class.
Excellent notes to remind you of all we learned.
Plenty of resources for the future.
We will cover COE, shop safety, workbench preparation, glass history, and techniques for embellishing your beads.

Lampwork Shop Time

Practice, practice, PRACTICE!
That’s the only way to get better at beadmaking.
Once you feel more confident this is where you ask about and learn all the advanced skills.
Take advantage of 25 years of making mistakes, epiphanies, shortcuts, and techniques.
We will learn the soft glass techniques you want.
Once again, no secrets! Just Glass!

Enameling

Enameling

I truly love everything glass!
Powdered glass on metal is a dream come true!
In this all day class we will touch lightly on:
Painting with enamel
Cloisonné
Torch Enameling
You will make a small, simple piece in each.
Learn about kiln settings, try leaded or non-leaded, and prepping your metals for the different techniques.

Etching for Champlevé

We will make a base piece using an electric etch process and a chemical etch process to etch a design deeply into copper.
Then learn the champlevé process by packing enamels, kilning, and grinding to a beautiful finish. This will be an all day process but well worth the results.

Jewelry Fabrication

Fundamentals of Soldering

Having the fundamentals of soldering down is the foundation upon which all your jewelry future is built.
Teaching the basic skills has always been one of the greatest joys in my life!
This all day class is devoted to making sure you are comfortable with the torch, the terms, the tools, and the technique needed for you to be able to move forward with confidence.
The goal is to get you to a point where you can feel confident in approaching, and troubleshooting, your designs and seeing them through to a beautifully finished piece of jewelry.

Bezel Setting

Basic torch soldering skills are absolutely necessary for this class.
We suggest it as a follow up class of Soldering Fundamentals. (make a weekend of soldering).
Bezel settings are an absolute must whether you are setting stones, enamels, or making a bezel for your micromosaics.
In this class you will have time to try a few different techniques.
Look beyond the tragedy of a melted bezel and see the possibilities of a masterpiece!
Lose the fear of delicate solder joints and embrace each aspect of soldering a bezel set piece.
